Weight Watchers is launching a new plan, WW PersonalPoints™, read on to learn everything we know about it so far.

First and foremost I am not affiliated with WW in any way. Anything I share in this post is information I was able to gather from our good friend the “internet”, any of you can do the same by simply doing a little research. I can not vouch that the information is correct, I am simply basing it on what we have seen in other countries for the new program.

If you have been a WW member for a while then it is no secret to you that we can expect to see program changes every few years, I myself have been a member for well over 20 years so I’ve seen my fair share of program changes. Changes can be scary, but WW, as a company is so successful because they consistently evolve and change their diet plan as new research comes out.

When does the new WW plan launch?

The new WW PersonalPoints™ plan has already launched in some places, New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K, this helps us with some insight as to how the new program will look, while other countries programs can sometimes be slightly different, for the most part, they are the same. It is expected that the PersonalPoints™ program will launch in both the U.S and Canada on November 8th.

So will we still have the 3 colored plans to follow, blue, purple, and green?

No, the MyWW program with the 3 colored programs to choose from will be no more, it will now just be known as The new WW PersonalPoints™

What do we know so far about the new WW PersonalPoints™

  • Everyone will take the WW personal assessment, which asks questions like, “Do you stock your fridge with fruits and vegetables and lean proteins?” It will ask you about your activity routine and even how much sleep you are getting.
  • You will be given the option to choose from a list of zero point foods, including your favorites such as potatoes, avocados, and brown rice, you’ll also choose from a list of proteins you eat regularly, such as chicken, pork, beef, lentils, eggs, and yogurt. In some of the categories, you will select 1 option and in some, you get to choose more than one.
  • Once you are done with the assessment you will be given a list of your own personal zero points foods, based on the answers you submitted. The foods will be similar to the ones you can have for zero points on the current blue & purple MyWW program, like eggs, chicken, oatmeal, and corn. The idea behind this is that the plan will be catered to you, so the foods you get for zero points are all foods you actually enjoy eating.
  • You will also be given a daily points allowance, just as you are now and a weekly points allowance, these can vary a lot from one person to the next and it really will come down to the personal assessment that you will take. You will still be able to “rollover” points.
  • According to the Australian website, all nutritional info is taken into account when determining the point value for foods.
  • Something new they are adding is you can earn additional points for eating vegetables, drinking all your water, and steps/exercise.
  • One notable change with the new plan is higher fat foods such as nuts and avocado (this is exciting!!)  will now be lower in points, and I think I read that for those who choose it avocado can be a zero point food.
  • Once the new app is up and running and you have taken the personal assessment all of your saved recipes will be adjusted based on your personal points.
  • The App will give you a daily step or physical activity target to reach and doing so may earn you some extra points.
  • You can retake the assessment as often as you want, sometimes we change our likes and dislikes with the foods we eat and this may reflect on your own personal points. Your current weight, amount of weight you want to lose, and age will all be factored in when receiving your own daily personal points target.

What if I hate the new program, can I still follow the old one?

This is where I say, you do you! Not everyone is going to be accepting of the new program, that’s just life, and if you are happy with the current one and don’t want anything to change then you do what is best for you. You won’t be able to follow the old program on the WW App but there are many third-party apps available that you will be able to continue on the MyWW program if that is what you choose to do. A few of my favorite third-party apps are ProTracker and iTrackbites.

What is your take on this new program?

As mentioned above I have been a WW lifetime member for over 20 years, I have lost count on how many times it has changed on me and sometimes I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with WW. There have been programs I’ve loved and excelled at, hello Points Plus I’m talking to you, and programs I hated and refused to follow! I will say that I am a firm believer that if you work the program, the program will work, whichever program you follow, if you follow it correctly you will have success.

It sounds like WW finally listened to everyone that complained after points plus switched to freestyle and all these new zero point foods came out, many complained that they didn’t like a lot of these foods and were being punished for not liking them. Two different people could both have say 23 daily points, one loved all the zero point foods and incorporated them into their day, the other disliked all but one of the zero point foods so their day was a lot less food than the other person. Now it seems we get to pick and choose our zero-point foods which is why the program can look different for everyone. I think having the program focus on each individual is a very positive thing.

What will this mean for all of your recipes, will you still list points?

This is a tricky one to answer, please know I will do everything I can to ensure points are listed, however, this new program is going to make that challenging. Any recipes with zero point foods, which is most of my recipes can vary in points depending on the individual, what might be 2 points for person A could be 4 points for person B based on what foods they select as their zero point foods. The points for any recipe can easily be figured out though by simply building my recipe in your WW App, this way you can be sure you get the right point value for you.

I will continue to list all nutritional macros for every recipe as well as MyWW points, blue, green & purple, and points plus for those who wish to follow either of these programs.

How do I build your recipe in my WW App?

This is easy I promise, open your WW App and go to the search bar at the top then select “My Foods” from the options below. Once you are in “My Foods” select “Recipes” in the middle then “Create” in the top right corner. This is where you will build the recipe, you will name it, add in the servings, and then add all ingredients. When you are done it will give you a point value per serving and once the program changes that will be catered to your own personal points.

Just a final note to say a big thank you for all of your continued support, I get to do what I love doing which is creating recipes, because of all of you! As mentioned above change can be hard, and scary but it can also be good. It is about figuring out what works best for you and what you are comfortable with, remember this is your journey and no one else, do what works for you! Program changes can make things difficult in my world, please know I am just one person, me, myself, and I working on this blog, so when changes happen I can only work as fast as one person can to do the necessary updating needed. I appreciate your patience through it all!

  1. Just the thought of how difficult this going to be is causing anxiety. What I mean by difficult is this, both my wife and I are on purple so either one of us could either find a recipe in the WW database or on your site when it’s our turn to cook and know this will be a 6 point dinner for instance. This new plan will make this impossible. I’m a planner and I always work backwards in that once I know what’s for dinner I can plug-in Quick Add points first as a placeholder for dinner and then I just split up the remaining day’s points for Breakfast, Lunch and snacks, and then add in the actual dinner recipe.

I will no longer be able to do this because now that same meal is going to be different between the both of us. Adding more work to how we track means less tracking and more guestimating or a different program altogether.

    1. Hi Stephen, I definitely hear your concerns, one suggestion is if you and your wife are happy on purple and enjoying the zero point foods this program offers then when you take your assessments make sure you pick the same zero point foods, basically the ones purple offers now, this should help when deciding on recipes you can both enjoy, my guess is they will be the same points for both of you if you pick and choose the same zero point foods. Good luck on the new program, my guess is it will all fall into place and you’ll be able to make it work without too many changes 🙂

      1. Hi Kate! I m afraid that will not be possible. When on purple, brown rice, oats, whole wheat pasta, potatoes and sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, fat free yogurt and other food were 0 points. Now you have to select only a certain number, so if you choose rice and wheat pasta, you forego potatoes, and other starchy veggies. I am having trouble figuring this out….

        1. Hi, I’m not sure what you are telling me won’t work?
Yes I am aware that everyone has different 0PP foods, and it all depends on the assessment, I actually have seen some members that have most of what you listed as a 0PP foods but very little daily points, I’d suggest taking the assessment a few times to find a happy balance

  2. Thank you for all of your hard work in keeping your recipes up to date with current and past WW programs!! I love your recipes!!!

  3. Thank you for taking time to research and explain what you’ve learned about the new program. Although changes in the U.S. may vary, your post allows me to think about what’s coming and mentally prepare for it.
    Thanks!

  4. This was a very informative and balanced assessment. Thank you for all you do to support WW followers with your delicious recipes. Much appreciated!

  5. Thanks for gathering this information. I’m excited about the new program – I’m one of those people who doesn’t like a lot of the zero point foods. PS: I love your recipes!

    1. Hi Gail, you are welcome, I hope the program works out well for you 🙂 I’m the same way, not a fan of many of them

  6. I am very excited to see the new program roll out next week. I enjoyed reading your take on it. I had lost 20 lbs on points plus but struggle on the colors as about the same time they rolled it out I found out I am allergic to dairy, soy, bananas, ext.

Bless you as you work to make your blog work for all of us WW.

  7. I also loved points plus.
Looking forward to the new program.
    Hope there are fewer bugs.
Have most of your cookbooks & really appreciate the work you do!
    Thanks

    1. Hmm not sure on that one, I drink cashew as most dairy-based milk upset my stomach (although not all dairy products do) It will be interesting to see what new foods are zero points 🙂
