I enjoy baking up a good loaf although it can be tricky. When you swap out different ingredients to keep the recipe WW points friendly, it can cause the loaf not to rise. I’ve had many flops in my day! Some of my loaf recipes are denser than others and it really all does come down to the ingredients used. But this recipe for Orange Chocolate Marble Cake is one of the wins.

Orange and chocolate is probably one of my favorite flavor combinations, so I was excited when this one worked out. It’s delicious, not too dense, and tastes more like a piece of cake and a breakfast or snack loaf. This loaf makes a heartwarming treat during the fall and winter when you need a bit of citrus to brighten up the day. It’s fantastic for breakfast, morning, snack, brunch or dessert. Whatever you feel the craving for. Let’s get to the recipe!

Three reasons why you need to make this recipe!

It’s beautiful!

Anything food a marble effect just makes the dessert that much more fun. This is a great loaf to gift someone as a housewarming gift.

The orange and chocolate make a fantastic combo.

Citrus just enhances chocolate’s natural flavor, so the combination of these two is a win-win.

It’s a healthy loaf even though it doesn’t taste like it.

As I said before, this loaf is one of the wins in my book. No one will be able to tell that it’s a little lightened up.

Ingredients you need to make Orange Chocolate Marble Cake:

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1/2 cup 1% milk
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1.5 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • Zest of 1 large orange (use this orange for the orange juice, after zesting)
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 37 g (about 1/4 cup) Lily’s sugar-free dark chocolate chips

How to make Orange Chocolate Marble Cake (step by step):

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and spray a regular 9×5 loaf pan with some cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and mix in the brown sugar. Add in the apple sauce, milk, orange juice, and vanilla and mix well.
  3. Stir in the all-purpose flour, baking powder and orange zest and mix well.
  4. Divide the batter into 2 bowls. In one bowl, add the cocoa powder and stir well, then in the other bowl, fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Pour half of the chocolate chip batter into the loaf pan, then top with 2/3 of the cocoa powder batter. Using a knife, swirl the two batters together, top with the remaining chocolate chip batter and then the remaining cocoa powder batter, and swirl again.
  6. Bake the loaf in the oven for 45 minutes. Let cool, then cut into 10 equal slices.

Different ways to change up this recipe:

  • Lily’s dark chocolate chips are dairy-free. The other versions are not, so you can use any of Lily’s baking chip options as long as you don’t need it to be dairy-free.
  • If you’re using self-rising flour, don’t add in the baking powder. Self-rising flour already has baking powder mixed in. I don’t suggest using self-rising flour though because you need all of the baking powder listed to help the loaf rise.

Tips and Tricks for Making Orange Chocolate Marble Cake:

  • The loaf is best stored in the fridge after day 1 and it will freeze well. You could even freeze individual slices (wrapped well) so you can pull out one serving as needed.
