The ingredients needed to make the dip are shown. A plate with a full bock of feta, a measuring cup with yogurt, a small bowl with cream cheese sit alongside herbs and a whole lemon.

Ingredients in Whipped Feta

  •  8 ounces full-fat feta cheese: Feta is the base for this recipe and I recommend buying the full block rather than pre-crumbled for the best taste.
  • 1/2 cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt adds a tangy flavor. It also helps the feta to blend and become creamy.
  • 1/4 cup whipped cream cheese: Whipped cream cheese thickens the feta and acts as an emulsifier.
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest: Lemon adds a bright flavor that balances the dish.
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill: Dill adds a refreshing contrast to the creaminess.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley: Parsley garnishes the dish and adds a slightly peppery flavor that balances the dairy.

Instructions for Making Whipped Feta

1. Break the feta into chunks and place into a blender or food processor. Pulse 5-6 times until mostly broken down.

A small food processor shows the texture after the initial blend of feta.

2. Add the lemon zest, cream cheese and the yogurt. Blend on low for 20-30 seconds until the feta is mostly smooth but with a visible texture. Overblending it can ultimately make it runny.

3. Scrape the whipped feta dip into a serving bowl. Spread out with a spoon but intentionally leave small lines and ridges to add texture. Sprinkle the fresh herbs all over the dip. Feel free to add any additions such as fresh cracked pepper, honey, or olive oil drizzles into the ridges created with the spoon. Serve chilled. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Switch up the flavor: Love spicy? Add a generous sprinkle of crushed red peppers or top your whipped feta dip with sliced pickled jalapenos. If you enjoy sundried tomatoes or roasted red bell peppers, add a couple of chopped tablespoons before blending it up. For garlic lovers, try adding 1-2 cloves of roasted garlic or garlic paste. Since the flavors are delicate, just be sure to add a small amount at a time and taste as you go when experimenting with new flavors.
  • Swap the feta: Soft goat cheese works in place of the feta. It will have a stronger taste but if that’s a favorite of yours, you’ll love the whipped version too.
  • Customize the topping: The topping can truly be your own creation. A drizzle of honey or olive oil, lots of herbs, walnuts, or even topping with chopped olives.
  • Use fat-free or reduced-fat feta: I opted for regular feta cheese because my local stores did not have reduced-fat options available. Additionally, since many of the accompaniments are zero points, I was comfortable with this option. If you’d like to increase your serving size but not greatly increase the points, feel free to try out a reduced-fat option. Just be aware those varieties may produce a less creamy-tasting result.

Tips and Tricks for Making Whipped Feta Dip

  • Make it a snack board: Hummus is another low-point option that will pair well with all of the same vegetables as this dip. Adding both to a snack board can give variety and make the experience even more enjoyable.
  • Use it as a spread: This whipped dip makes a great addition to a juicy turkey burger. Pile it up with lettuce, tomatoes, and a generous spoonful of whipped feta for a delicious Mediterranean twist.
  • Avoid overwhipping: While it’s tempting to turn on the blender and let it go until completely smooth, ultimately that can affect the consistency. Whipped feta tastes best when it appears mostly smooth with small pieces of feta visible. It will be light and airy but not overly smooth or runny.
  • Include a variety of dippers: Pretzels, herb-flavored crackers, pita chips, and fresh veggies such as cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and broccoli are all excellent choices for dipping. Having a mix of low-point and zero-point options will achieve balance and be much more satisfying.
