It’s easy to make – just cook some ground beef and throw the rest of the ingredients into a casserole dish for the oven to do the rest of the work. It makes a great meal for the whole family in just under 30 minutes. A 30 minute max prep and cook time is exactly what you want on a busy weeknight. Three reasons why you need to make Sloppy Joe Casserole! 

It’s a non-messy way to eat the classic dish. 

Just the name tells you how messy traditional sloppy joes are. Mix that with kids, and you’ve got a mess you’re cleaning up for days. Sloppy Joe casserole, however, is the perfect solution. You get all the yummy flavors without the mess. 

It’s a fantastic way to hide some veggies. 

With the healthy ground beef and Manwich meat sauce providing most of the flavor, you could hide a variety of veggies in this casserole, and your kids (and you) wouldn’t even know they were there. Frozen cauliflower rice or shredded zucchini are great options. 

Biscuits pair so well with sloppy joe sauce. 

Traditional sloppy joe meat is placed on a hamburger bun. But topping this casserole with a buttery biscuit is so much better. The biscuit helps soak up the delicious manwich sauce so you get every scrumptious bite. 

Ingredients you need to make Sloppy Joe Casserole: 

  • 1 lb cooked extra lean ground beef
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 1 (398ml) can of Manwich sloppy joe sauce 
  • 2/3 cup light shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 (7.5 oz) can of Great Value biscuits (should have 10 biscuits in the can)
  • 1.5 Tbsp melted reduced calorie margarine
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, diced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

How to make Sloppy Joe Casserole (step by step): 

  1. Cook the ground beef and onions on the stove in a pan and drain off the fat once it’s cooked.
  2. While the ground beef is cooking, preheat the oven to 350F and spray a 9-inch square dish.
  3. Add the Manwich sloppy joe sauce to the meat and let it simmer on low for 5 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Pour the meat mixture into the dish and top with the reduced fat shredded cheese.
  5. Place 9 of the 10 biscuits on top of the meat mixture (shown in the picture). You will have one extra that you can cut into small pieces and stuff in between the biscuits to fill holes.
  6. Bake the casserole in the oven for 14 minutes. Just before the time is up, melt the margarine and add the diced garlic and oregano to it. Remove the dish from the oven and using a small spoon, drizzle the garlic oregano butter over the top of all the biscuits.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven for 6-8 minutes, and let cook until the biscuits are golden brown. It can sit for 15-20 minutes after baking so that it’s not extremely juicy.

Different ways to change up this recipe: 

  • Vegan version: use chopped shitake mushrooms instead of ground beef. It gives the same meaty texture, without the animal protein. 
  • Add chopped broccoli, chopped mushrooms, cauliflower rice, or shredded zucchini to the meat mixture to really bulk this up without adding any extra points. 
  • To save points, you can use lean ground turkey or ground chicken instead of ground beef. It will change it to 5 weight watcher points per serving. 
  • To save more points, you can take out the reduced calorie margarine, and just use spray butter to top the biscuits mid-way through baking. Spray butter won’t add any points, and you can just sprinkle on the garlic and oregano after spraying on the spray butter. 
  • If you like heat, add diced jalapenos to the meat mixture.

Tips and Tricks for Making Sloppy Joe Casserole: 

  • You can make this ahead of time, but don’t put the biscuit dough on top until you’re ready to bake. Go ahead and make the meat mixture, put it in the 9 inch dish, then wrap it tightly and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to make it. Before putting it in the oven is when you want to add the biscuits on top. 
  • Sloppy Joe Casserole keeps in the fridge for up to a week or it can be stored in the freezer (wrapped tightly!) for up to 6 months. 
  • You can top it with a little extra cheese if you have the points for it. Sloppy Joe casserole also goes well with chips, mustard, or pickles. You get to decide!

    I am feeling very frustrated I made this tonight and added broccoli because I needed some veg but when I create the recipe on weight watchers it says it’s like 13 pp a serving…what am I doing wrong?

    1. Hi Cassie.. I wouldn’t trust the App too much right now, they are still working out a lot of kinks.. also adding broccoli should not increase points.. When I input the nutritional info into the new calculator for smart points I get 7sp, for points plus its 5pp.. Sorry for your frustration ..

    1. Hi Michelle, I have had a few people in Australia ask about the pillsbury, unfortunately they don’t carry it, I always suggest people look at the pillsbury.com website to see if they can compare it to anything, in some cases pizza dough might work if it is thinned out.. hope that helps…

    1. Hi Kat, I use Becal light.. It may depend on where you live and what is available to you as far as brand goes, you can use butter it just might increase points a little..Thanks for your kind words 🙂

    For anyone who wants to add more veggies–I processed 8 button mushrooms and 4 good sized florets of fresh broccoli really fine in the food processor, chopped about 3/4 cup of zucchini and 1/2 cup green pepper and added all of that to the skillet while browning the meat. I like to slip in as many veggies as I can! I also used a 5-count can of biscuits, quartered them and laid them evenly on top of the casserole. I did not put the butter mixture on top. It turned out awesome, and my kids never even knew they were eating their veggies. I went ahead and plugged it all in on the WW site as a new recipe to get the points right for my own count. It was about 10 points per serving, so I’m not sure how you were able to get it down to 7, especially including the butter mixture on top. At any rate, my family loved it. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. How many servings did you have, 9 small servings like mine? I don’t use the recipe builder on App, I use my fitness pal, build my recipe and then use nutritional numbers in my WW calculator.. Glad you enjoyed it and great way to get veggies in 🙂

        1. Hi, I never cook with ground Turkey, based on the WW App 1 lb raw extra lean beef is 12SP and if it’s 99% fat free ground turkey 1 lb raw is 6SP hope that helps

    1. Hi, I am not sure how that works, om myfitnesspal I go by k8drizzle, I only really use myfitnesspal to figure out nutritional numbers on my recipes so I don’t know if you can add people etc..
