These Weight Watchers Caramel Apples are truly decadent, easy to make, and low in points!
Did you know that you can have caramel apples when following Weight Watchers? These Weight Watchers caramel apples are only 5 points per apple, which is a significant difference compared to regular caramel apples, which can be 10-12 points or more per serving, depending on where you get them.
The trick to making low-point caramel apples is to use sugar-free caramel candies and to also use smaller apples. Honestly, with the sugar-free caramel, you can’t even tell a significant difference in the flavor. It is just as delicious and comforting! You can even decorate them with sprinkles, nuts, or other decorations to upgrade their presentation. But even if you just make them plain, they will blow everyone away with their delicious flavor, textures, and display.
This dessert is always such a treat because the sweet and silky caramel is the perfect balance for the crisp apple. And, of course, by using Granny Smith apples, the tart flavor of the fruit also offsets this sweet caramel, making the perfect sweet-and-sour flavor combination. If you’re making these treats for a party or gathering, you can check out my collection for other desserts that would taste yummy alongside them.

Ingredients in Weight Watchers Caramel Apples

- 7.7 oz sugar-free chewy caramel candies (I used Werther’s brand)
- Optional: sprinkles

Instructions for making Weight Watchers Caramel Apples
- For preparation: If your apples are really waxy, it is best to remove the wax first. There are a couple of methods, such as scraping it off or dipping the apples in boiling water for 5-10 seconds and then drying them.
- Remove the stem from the apple and carefully stick the candy stick into the center going downwards. Be careful not to pierce all the way through the apple.
- In a small pan on the stovetop, heat the caramel candies and salt over medium-low heat, stirring until smooth. Add ½ – 1 tbsp of milk as needed to thin it slightly. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle simmer.

4. The caramel will be thin. Allow it to rest for a minute or two until it’s slightly thicker. Transfer the melted caramel to a heat-safe bowl. Make a tester apple: Take one of the apples and carefully dunk it into the caramel. If the caramel is very thin and easily slides off, you need to let the caramel cool a little bit longer. On the other hand, if it is too thick and heavy, it might not be hot enough. It’s important to find a happy medium.
5. Once you’ve found the right consistency, dip the apple 2/3 of the way, turning it and shaking it slightly. Scrape the bottom of it on the bowl to remove excess caramel. Transfer the tester apple to a sheet tray lined with parchment paper and allow it to set. Continue the process with the other apples, monitoring the caramel’s consistency and reheating it if needed.

6. Let the apples rest for a bit until you can easily peel them off the parchment paper. I noticed that the sugar-free caramel I used started to droop off the apples the next day, but it made for a delightful treat that was perfect for enjoying the same day.
Variations and Substitutions
- Caramel Apples with Nuts: Instead of the optional sprinkles, you can also use chopped nuts if you have some extra points to use up. Make sure the nut pieces aren’t too large; otherwise, they will be too heavy to stick to the caramel.
- Caramel Apples with Chocolate Drizzle: To upgrade the presentation, you can drizzle some chocolate lines over the caramel apples after dipping them. I suggest melting dark chocolate chips that are low-point and melting them in the microwave.
- Caramel Apple Slices: cut the apples into slices and dry them with paper towels. Dunk the apple slices part of the way in the caramel and let them set up on parchment paper.
Tips and Tricks for Making Weight Watchers Caramel Apples
- Use thick candy sticks. The caramel apples can be heavy, so it’s important to use thicker sticks that can hold the weight.
- Be careful not to overheat the caramel. If you overheat the caramel, it will be very thin and will just slide down the apple and create a large pool on the bottom. A small pool on the bottom is alright, but you don’t want it to be too much.
- Make sure to scrape the bottom of the apple to get rid of the extra caramel; this will also prevent pooling and help give a better presentation.
- If you are going to store the caramel apples overnight, store them in the refrigerator. Although caramel apples can be safe to leave on the counter for a day or two, it is best to refrigerate them and remove them from the fridge a bit before enjoying them.
- Every caramel candy brand is different, so if you use another type of sugar-free caramel, you might need to use more or less ounces.
- You can also use medium or large apples and only dip the fruit 1/3 of the way into the caramel.
