These WW Air Fryer Hush Puppies are a low-point version of a classic at just 2 WW points per serving. They are much healthier than average hush puppies because cooking in an air fryer eliminates the need for excessive oil. The recipe itself is also lightened up since it uses a lighter substitute for the buttermilk, butter, and sugar. These small swaps make a huge difference!
You’ll love the hush puppies because they’re nice and crisp on the outside while being tender on the inside. The garlic powder gives them a deep flavor, and the green onions add a sweet yet sharp vegetal taste, as well as some color. You can enjoy these hush puppies by themselves or pair them with various dips and sauces. I personally love dipping them in a remoulade, tartar sauce, or yogurt dip or just spreading them with some honey butter.

Ingredients in Weight Watchers Air Fryer Hush Puppies
- 1 cup Yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup All-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp Baking powder
- ¾ tsp Salt
- 1 ½ tbsp Zero-calorie sweetener or sugar
- 3 tbsp Green onions, chopped
- 1 ½ tsp Garlic powder
- 3 ½ tbsp Light butter substitute, melted
- 5 tbsp Fat-free milk
- 1 Egg

Instructions for making Weight Watchers Air Fryer Hush Puppies
- In one bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients until there are no lumps. Add the green onions and mix to combine. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the other wet ingredients.
- Add the wet mixture to the dry and gently fold to form a batter. Be careful not to overmix. If the mixture seems dry, you can add a splash or two of milk/water to help moisten the batter.

3. Scoop the batter into balls that are about 2 tablespoons each and roll them with your hands.
4. Working in batches if needed, air fry the hush puppies for 8-10 minutes at 385F, flipping halfway through cooking. You’ll know they are done when you tap on them, and they feel hollow. They will also be golden brown on the outside.

Variations and Substitutions
- Hush Puppies with Jalapenos: Mix in chopped fresh jalapenos or diced jalapenos from a can. This will provide a bit more moisture to the batter, so don’t add too much; I suggest a couple of tablespoons.
- Hush Puppies with Cheese: You can add shredded cheese, such as fat-free or reduced-fat shredded cheddar.
- Other Mix-In Ideas: There are plenty of other mix-ins you can add to the batter, such as grated white onion or canned corn. You can also add more spices, such as onion powder or paprika, or even Cajun or Creole seasoning for flavor depth.
- Splurge Version: If you don’t mind a slight point increase, you can use regular sugar instead of an alternative sweetener. You can also use buttermilk or regular butter.
- Milk Type: Any type of milk will work, either dairy or non-dairy.
Tips and Tricks for Making Weight Watchers Air Fryer Hush Puppies
- Keep in mind that every air fryer is different, and the cooking time will vary depending on the appliance. It is crucial that you flip the hush puppies halfway through the cooking time and keep an eye on them.
- Be careful not to overmix the dough because it will make the hush puppies tough.
- Make sure to leave space in between them when you cook them for proper airflow. I had to make mine in 2 batches.
- You don’t have to preheat the air fryer, but you are welcome to if you want. It will likely shorten the cooking time.
- Hush puppies are best eaten fresh. However, if you have leftovers, you can store any extra hush puppies in a resealable bag or airtight container and try to enjoy them within 2 days.
