These homemade Tostitos copycat chips are a healthier alternative to the storebought version, made with less oil and no MSG. Made in the air fryer, these snacking chips are so easy to make and can be flavored with your favorite seasonings.
Need a snack for game day or movie night? Look no further. This 4-Point recipe is quick, cheap, and best of all, you’re in control of how much you make and eat.
Why should you try Homemade Tostitos?
This recipe is a winner for so many reasons. First off, it’s a healthier snack option. At 4 Weight Watchers points, it’s nowhere near what you’d rack up with a bag of store-bought tortilla chips.
You get to be the boss of the seasoning too. I usually go for paprika or taco seasoning (mostly because it’s easy), but you can use whatever tickles your fancy – cumin, smoked flavors, onion, and garlic powder – the more, the merrier. These tortilla chips should taste exactly how you like them.
By making them at home in an air fryer, you control the amount of oil. No MSG either, which means they’re a healthier option for kids too. And let’s not forget, making them yourself is way cheaper than buying the packaged stuff.

Ingredients:
- 6 medium wheat tortillas (about 8 inches or 20 cm in diameter), 342 g.
- 1 tablespoons vegetable oil (15 ml)
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (45 ml)
- 2 teaspoons taco seasoning (6 g)
Instructions:
- Prepare the tortillas: Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, cut each tortilla into 8 equal triangles. You should end up with 48 triangles in total.
- Make the seasoning mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, apple cider vinegar, and taco seasoning until well combined.
- Season the chips: Using a pastry brush or silicone basting brush, lightly coat both sides of each tortilla triangle with the seasoning mixture. Make sure to spread it evenly, reaching all the way to the edges.
- Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and let it preheat for about 3 minutes.
- Arrange the chips: Place a single layer of seasoned tortilla triangles in your air fryer basket. Be careful not to overcrowd; leave some space between each piece for proper air circulation. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the chips in several batches.
- Cook the chips: Air fry the tortilla triangles for 5-7 minutes, shaking the basket or flipping the chips halfway through cooking. Keep a close eye on them, especially during the last couple of minutes, as they can quickly go from golden brown to burnt.
- Cool and crisp: Once golden and crispy, remove the chips from the air fryer and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
- Repeat: Continue cooking the remaining seasoned tortilla triangles in batches until all are done.
- Serve and enjoy: Once all chips are cooked and cooled, serve immediately or store in an airtight container for later snacking.
Note: If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake these in a conventional oven. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake on a lined baking sheet for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
Variations and Substitutions
- I made these with wheat tortillas because I prefer the crunchier texture, but corn tortillas work great too.
- Feeling ambitious? Make your tortillas from scratch for truly homemade chips.
- When it comes to seasoning, the sky’s the limit. Just steer clear of pre-made seasonings that might sneak in some MSG. You could go for an Italian vibe with basil and oregano, or crank up the heat for some super spicy chips.
Tips and Tricks for Making Homemade Tostitos
- Cut your tortillas into equal-sized triangles. This isn’t just about looks – it ensures even cooking.
- Don’t skimp on the oil, but don’t go overboard either. A light spray or brush on both sides of the tortilla pieces does the trick.
- When using the air fryer, arrange your chips in a single layer. Overcrowding leads to uneven cooking, and nobody wants that.
- Keep a hawk’s eye on those chips during the last few minutes of cooking. They can go from golden to charcoal in the blink of an eye.
- Let them cool completely before putting them away, or you’ll end up with soggy Tostitos.
Remember, as I always say, making snacks at home puts you in the driver’s seat. You control the ingredients, and the portions, and best of all, you know exactly what you’re eating. Your wallet, your waistline, and your taste buds will thank you!
