No Mexican or Tex-Mex feast is complete without guacamole! This traditional guac recipe features avocado, onion, tomato, cilantro, lime juice, and salt, with lime juice being essential to prevent the avocado from browning.

Guacamole is a healthy avocado-based dip that has held a special place in Mexican culture since the Aztec era. It’s creamy, chunky, and well-balanced with fresh herbs, tangy onion, zesty lime, and spices that really hit the spot on a hot summer day.

Why should you try Guacamole?

Guacamole is a vegan and healthy choice that showcases the nutritional benefits of avocados in a simple, easy-to-make dip.

Avocados are highly valued in modern healthy eating trends, with avocado sauces often replacing less healthy options like mayonnaise or cream-based dips.

It pairs well with salads, meats, and quintessential Mexican favorites like chips, quesadillas, and enchiladas. Best of all, it’s quick to prepare using only fresh ingredients.

Ingredients:

Guacamole Ingredients
  • 2 ripe avocados (around 400 grams total weight)
  • ½ juice of a lime (around 30 ml)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Roma tomato, diced (around 80 grams)
  • 3 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped (around 45 grams)
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped (5 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (optional) (5 ml)

Instructions:

Cut the avocados in half lengthwise

1. Prepare the Avocados: Cut the avocados in half lengthwise. Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh and place it in a medium bowl. Discard the pits.

2. Prevent Browning: Immediately squeeze the juice of half a lime over the avocado flesh. This helps prevent browning and adds a touch of acidity.

In a large mortar and pestle to mash the avocados

3. Mashing:  For a more traditional and rustic texture, use a large mortar and pestle to mash the avocados. Add a pinch of salt to facilitate the process. Grind the avocados until you reach the desired consistency, whether slightly chunky or smoother. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle available, you can use a fork or a potato masher to mash the avocados. However, a mortar and pestle will provide a more authentic texture that is similar to guacamole traditionally prepared in Mexico.

4. Seasoning: Add the salt, freshly ground black pepper, and chopped red onion to the mashed avocado. Stir gently to combine.

5. Adding Freshness: Dice the Roma tomato and chop the fresh cilantro. Add both to the avocado mixture and stir them in gently.

6. Flavor Boost (Optional): If you prefer a richer flavor, drizzle in 1 teaspoon of olive oil and gently fold it in.

7. Taste and Adjust: Give your guacamole a taste and adjust the seasonings to your preference. You may want to add more lime juice, salt, or pepper for a brighter flavor.

8. Serve Immediately: Guacamole is best enjoyed fresh. Serve it immediately with your favorite dippers like tortilla chips, pita bread, or fresh vegetables.

Variations and Substitutions for Guacamole

The classic guacamole recipe is highly adaptable, allowing for numerous variations and substitutions. Here are some additional ideas to customize your guacamole:

1. Chilies: Adding chilies can significantly alter the heat level. Try using jalapeños for moderate heat, serranos for a spicier kick, or even habaneros for a fiery option. Roasting the chilies before adding them can also bring a smoky depth to the dip.

2. Garlic: For a richer, savorier flavor, add minced garlic. A small amount can go a long way in enhancing the overall taste.

3. Tropical fruits: Similar to pineapple, mango can add a sweet and tangy element to guacamole. Diced mango or pineapple pieces add both flavor and texture, making the dip more interesting.

4. Greek Yogurt: Mixing in Greek yogurt can create a creamier, tangier guacamole. This is also a great way to reduce the calorie content and add some protein, making it more filling and suitable for those following a Weight Watchers plan. Simply mix equal parts Greek yogurt and guacamole for a lighter, yet still flavorful, dip.

5. Tomatillos: Adding chopped tomatillos can give your guacamole a tangy, slightly tart flavor. Tomatillos are often used in salsa verde, and their acidity pairs well with the rich avocado.

6. Herbs: While cilantro is traditional, experimenting with other herbs like parsley, basil, or mint.

7. Spices: Adding spices such as cumin, smoked paprika, or chili powder can enhance the flavor of your guacamole.

Tips for Making the Best Guacamole

1. Choosing Avocados: Select avocados that are ripe but not overripe. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure. If they are too firm, leave them out at room temperature for a day or two. To speed up ripening, place them in a paper bag with an apple or banana.

2. Preventing Oxidation: After cutting the avocados, immediately add lime juice to prevent browning. Lime juice not only adds flavor but also keeps the guacamole looking fresh. If you have leftover guacamole, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to minimize air contact and refrigerate.

3. Mashing Techniques: For a chunky guacamole, use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocados. For a smoother texture, you can use a food processor or blender, but be careful not to over-process, as guacamole is traditionally meant to have some texture.

4. Serving Suggestions: Guacamole is traditionally served with tortilla chips, but it also pairs well with fresh vegetables, pita chips, or even as a topping for burgers, tacos, and salads. It can also be used as a spread for sandwiches or wraps.
