America’s top sandwich is the grilled cheese. This comforting, gooey classic earned a remarkable 79% likeability rating among survey participants. That means nearly 8 in 10 Americans say they like or somewhat like grilled cheese, making it the undisputed champion of America’s sandwich choices.

Coming in second place are two beloved poultry sandwiches. The turkey sandwich and the grilled chicken sandwich both received a 75% likeability rating. This means three-quarters of Americans have a positive opinion of these sandwiches, securing their spot just behind the iconic grilled cheese.

BLT and Ham Sandwiches

Despite three sandwiches in the survey containing bacon, only the BLT broke into the top five. The BLT tied with the ham sandwich, both scoring 69% on the likeability scale. These sandwiches demonstrate America’s ongoing love for bacon and traditional deli meats.

The club sandwich and the plain bacon sandwich followed closely behind the BLT and ham. The survey ranked these sandwiches in the sixth and seventh spots, respectively. Although bacon is popular, these bacon-forward sandwiches didn’t quite achieve the same level of national popularity as the top choices.

Peanut Butter & Jelly

Peanut butter and jelly claimed the eighth spot on the list of most liked sandwiches. This lunchtime staple beat out contenders like the meatball sandwich, French dip, and Reuben. PB&J remains a nostalgic and comforting favorite for many Americans across generations.

Regional Differences in Sandwich Preferences

While grilled cheese is loved nationwide, regional differences appear in the data. For example, Southerners like grilled cheese even more than the national average — 82% in the South compared to 79% nationally. Regional culture continues to shape sandwich preferences across the country.

People in the Northeast showed more affection for seafood sandwiches. The lobster roll received a 46% likeability rating in the Northeast compared to just 35% nationally. Similarly, the meatball sub was liked by 65% in the Northeast, well above the 56% national average.

Western Preference for the French Dip

In the Western U.S., the French dip sandwich scored 57% likeability, compared to 45% nationally. This suggests a regional fondness for this savory, beefy sandwich in states like California and neighboring areas. Regional flavors clearly influence sandwich popularity.

Midwesterners Stick to the Classics

Midwesterners largely align with national sandwich preferences, but they appear less adventurous. They were more likely to report they had never tried sandwiches like lobster rolls (41% hadn’t tried), crab cakes (39%), cheese and tomato (27%), and Cuban sandwiches (43%). This points to a narrower range of sandwich experience.

Lobster Roll: A Regional Specialty

The lobster roll’s national likeability rating stands at 35%, but it shines in the Northeast at 46%. This shows that proximity to fresh seafood plays a significant role in sandwich popularity. In regions where lobster is a staple, the sandwich enjoys much greater acclaim.
