Blackstone French Toast is a simple and delicious way to level up your mornings. With its rich custard base and endless ways to customize this dish, Blackstone French toast is the weekend breakfast experience you’ve been missing. Whether fruity toppings really speak to you, you like to load up on decadent caramel, or you prefer a traditional drizzle of pure maple syrup, French toast is always better when cooked on your Blackstone griddle.

French toast can feel like a time-consuming recipe even though the ingredient list is short. This is because you typically have to fry the bread in multiple batches. Due to its large cooking area, the Blackstone is a true time saver. Where it may take 20 minutes or more to cook enough French toast for your family on the stove, it can take less than 10 minutes on the Blackstone. Not to mention its even cooking surface creates a perfectly browned exterior while the inside of each slice is moist and full of flavor.

Ingredients in Blackstone French Toast

  • 8 (1-inch thick) slices Brioche- Brioche is a buttery and dense bread that’s perfect for French toast. Its egg-rich dough and sweetness make it naturally flavorful. You can also use sliced challah bread for this recipe.

  • 4 large eggs- Eggs make the custard base for French toast.
  • 1 cup milk- Milk adds creaminess and natural sugar which help with caramelization. For a richer French toast, you can use 3/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of heavy cream.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar- White sugar adds a hint of sweetness without being overwhelming. Since there are so many sweet toppings to choose from and the bread itself is naturally sweet, this recipe doesn’t need a lot of added sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract- Vanilla extract adds a subtle sweet undertone which complements the creaminess of the custard.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon- Cinnamon adds balance to the sweet flavors of the dish. Alternatively, you can use a blend of spices such as Pumpkin Pie Spice.
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt- Salt balances this recipe’s sweetness and helps flavor the custard.

Instructions for Making Blackstone French Toast

1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until well combined.

2. Press the bread into the egg mixture and let sit for 45 seconds on each side until well-soaked, but not soggy. This can vary based on your bread. Dense, thick bread will need more time whereas regular sliced sandwich bread or Texas toast may only require 20-30 seconds.

3. Then, transfer to a sheet pan or large cutting board for 5 minutes and repeat with the remaining slices.

6. Flip and cook the other side for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Depending on the type of bread you are using and how much it soaked, you may need to add 1-2 minutes per side to ensure it’s fully cooked. When done, it should feel firm to the touch in the center.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Swap the bread: While rich bread like brioche and challah are ideal, any bread you have on hand will work. Thicker cuts like Texas toast are great for absorbing lots of custard but regular-size sandwich bread works well too.
  • Use a different liquid: Milk is used for this recipe but you can use equal amounts of half and half as well. Coconut and almond milk will work too, but may adjust the richness and overall flavor.
  • Try a natural sweetener: As an alternative to sugar, you can use equal amounts of pure maple syrup or honey.

Tips and Tricks

  • Allow time to soak: French toast is made with a custard base that soaks into the bread. Too little time, and you could end up with a dry piece of bread because the custard has not soaked in. Not only does this impact texture but taste as well. Just be mindful not to soak it too long either. Overly soggy bread will not cook correctly and fall apart. Bread should feel wet all the way through but still hold its shape when held over a bowl.
  • Keep the heat low: Low-medium heat on the Blackstone is 300°F-325°F. This is optimal for cooking French toast as it will allow the custard time to cook without burning. Remember that cooking on the Blackstone can differ from an electric stove due to the proximity to the heat source and the heat distribution. It’s better to start low and slightly increase the heat as needed.
  • Add toppings: This meal goes well with a wide variety of toppings so feel free to get creative with your choices. Small bowls filled with chocolate chips, nuts, powdered sugar, and flavored syrups will all taste delicious. Remember to wash and cut fruit toppings ahead of time so they are ready before you begin cooking. The French toast will cook quickly and having your toppings prepared will ensure you get to enjoy a warm meal.
