It’s a non-messy way to eat the classic dish. 

Just the name tells you how messy traditional sloppy joes are. Mix that with kids, and you’ve got a mess you’re cleaning up for days. Sloppy Joe casserole, however, is the perfect solution. You get all the yummy flavors without the mess. 

It’s a fantastic way to hide some veggies. 

With the healthy ground beef and Manwich meat sauce providing most of the flavor, you could hide a variety of veggies in this casserole, and your kids (and you) wouldn’t even know they were there. Frozen cauliflower rice or shredded zucchini are great options. 

Biscuits pair so well with sloppy joe sauce. 

Traditional sloppy joe meat is placed on a hamburger bun. But topping this casserole with a buttery biscuit is so much better. The biscuit helps soak up the delicious manwich sauce so you get every scrumptious bite. 

Ingredients you need to make Sloppy Joe Casserole: 

  • 1 lb cooked extra lean ground beef
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 1 (398ml) can of Manwich sloppy joe sauce 
  • 2/3 cup light shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 (7.5 oz) can of Great Value biscuits (should have 10 biscuits in the can)
  • 1.5 Tbsp melted reduced calorie margarine
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, diced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

How to make Sloppy Joe Casserole (step by step): 

  1. Cook the ground beef and onions on the stove in a pan and drain off the fat once it’s cooked.
  2. While the ground beef is cooking, preheat the oven to 350F and spray a 9-inch square dish.
  3. Add the Manwich sloppy joe sauce to the meat and let it simmer on low for 5 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Pour the meat mixture into the dish and top with the reduced fat shredded cheese.
  5. Place 9 of the 10 biscuits on top of the meat mixture (shown in the picture). You will have one extra that you can cut into small pieces and stuff in between the biscuits to fill holes.
  6. Bake the casserole in the oven for 14 minutes. Just before the time is up, melt the margarine and add the diced garlic and oregano to it. Remove the dish from the oven and using a small spoon, drizzle the garlic oregano butter over the top of all the biscuits.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven for 6-8 minutes, and let cook until the biscuits are golden brown. It can sit for 15-20 minutes after baking so that it’s not extremely juicy.

Different ways to change up this recipe: 

  • Vegan version: use chopped shitake mushrooms instead of ground beef. It gives the same meaty texture, without the animal protein. 
  • Add chopped broccoli, chopped mushrooms, cauliflower rice, or shredded zucchini to the meat mixture to really bulk this up without adding any extra points. 
  • To save points, you can use lean ground turkey or ground chicken instead of ground beef. It will change it to 5 weight watcher points per serving. 
  • To save more points, you can take out the reduced calorie margarine, and just use spray butter to top the biscuits mid-way through baking. Spray butter won’t add any points, and you can just sprinkle on the garlic and oregano after spraying on the spray butter. 
  • If you like heat, add diced jalapenos to the meat mixture.

Tips and Tricks for Making Sloppy Joe Casserole: 

  • You can make this ahead of time, but don’t put the biscuit dough on top until you’re ready to bake. Go ahead and make the meat mixture, put it in the 9 inch dish, then wrap it tightly and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to make it. Before putting it in the oven is when you want to add the biscuits on top. 
  • Sloppy Joe Casserole keeps in the fridge for up to a week or it can be stored in the freezer (wrapped tightly!) for up to 6 months. 
  • You can top it with a little extra cheese if you have the points for it. Sloppy Joe casserole also goes well with chips, mustard, or pickles. You get to decide!

  1. Hello. Have made this twice before with ground lean beef but going to make it with lean ground chicken, in the recipe builder comes out to 5 smart points a peice. Sure it will still be delish ?.

  3. I can never get the biscuits to cook properly. They’re always still doughy. And if I put them back in the get harder on top, but still doughy in the bottom.

    My family likes it but we usually have to scrape away some of the biscuit.

    Anybody else ever have this issue?

    1. H Niki, I have seen some say they have this issue too and all I can think is ovens can vary so maybe just play around with the temperature and or cooking time

  4. I made this tonight and I was honestly so excited. But it’s been 30 minutes and the dough still isn’t cooked and I’m getting extreme frustrated and ready to toss the whole thing and order a pizza.

  5. This was delicious but realistically it’s not serving 9 adults. Kids maybe but not adults. Changing servings to 5 makes it 16 points. It was heavenly but 1lb if meat isn’t feeding 9 ppl.

Hi Karen, it is 9 servings because of the 9 biscuits used.. nowhere do I state that 1 serving is plenty for 1, I just listed it as 9 servings as mentioned due to the biscuits, that would be like saying a recipe of cookies that makes 36 will feed 36 people, we all know most will have more than 1 cookie 😉 serving size does not always mean that it will accommodate a family of that size, sorry you felt that way .. as an alternative you can swap out the ground beef for turkey/chicken to lower the points

  8. This was very hearty and very good. I’m lactose intolerant and used a dairy free cheese and the biscuits helped melt it. This is definitely going to be a regular in my rotation. Might try the manwich that is burbon barbeque for something a little sweeter next time. Great recipe though!
